Explanation of Hebrews 4:12 - Learn About the Power of God’s Word

Thoughts on Today’s Verse…

We may all know that God’s word is like a double-edged sword, but do you know how it pierces and divides asunder the soul and spirit, joints and marrow of a person, and discerns the thoughts and intentions of the heart? Read this essay to find the answer, and you will also discover the impurities in your faith and know about God’s righteous disposition.

The Scripture says, “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12). This verse shows us one characteristic of God’s word: It can expose what is deep within a person’s heart, revealing their true nature—this is something that no human word can achieve. Because God is the Creator, He is omnipotent and able to examine the depths of the human heart. He knows exactly what is inside us, how deeply we have been corrupted by Satan, and which corrupt dispositions we possess. This is something that we as humans cannot know. However, God is well aware of the extent of human corruption and the truth of our corruption. With just one sentence, He can pierce through to the marrow of our bones and the depths of our souls, fully revealing our true nature and essence. Just as God says, “So many believe in Me only that I might heal them. So many believe in Me only that I might use My powers to drive unclean spirits out from their bodies, and so many believe in Me simply that they might receive peace and joy from Me. So many believe in Me only to demand from Me greater material wealth. So many believe in Me just to spend this life in peace and to be safe and sound in the world to come. So many believe in Me to avoid the suffering of hell and to receive the blessings of heaven. So many believe in Me only for temporary comfort, yet do not seek to gain anything in the world to come. When I brought down My fury upon man and seized all the joy and peace he once possessed, man became doubtful. When I gave unto man the suffering of hell and reclaimed the blessings of heaven, man’s shame turned into anger. When man asked Me to heal him, I paid him no heed and felt abhorrence toward him; man departed from Me to instead seek the way of evil medicine and sorcery. When I took away all that man had demanded from Me, everyone disappeared without a trace. Thus, I say that man has faith in Me because I give too much grace, and there is far too much to gain.” God’s word is like a double-edged sword that pierces deep into our hearts, exposing the impurities and wrong motives of our faith in God. We can realize that we believe in God not out of true love for Him or obedience to Him, but rather to deceive God and obtain His grace and blessings through verbal faith in God, completely making a deal with God. As believers in God, we are actually deceiving God and using Him. How selfish and deceitful we are! With such belief in God, how can we gain God’s approval, and how can we be qualified to enter the kingdom of heaven? In God’s word, we can also see that God’s righteousness and holiness are unoffendable by man. God wants our sincerity and reverence for Him. If someone believes in God with impure motives, it is deceiving God, making God detestable and hateful, and God does not acknowledge such faith. This is the power of God’s word. Not only does it help us understand our own corrupt essence, but it also allows us to understand God’s righteous dispositions.
