This people draws near to me with their mouth, and honors me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
– Matthew 15:8
Thoughts on Today’s Verse…
This verse is the’ exposure of the chief priests, scribes, and Pharisees! They were familiar with the and travelled sea and land preaching God’s way, often fasted and prayed, made broad their phylacteries, even purposely stood in the synagogues and on the street corners to engage in long prayers, and lectured the Jewish people with the Scriptures. They seemed reverent from the outside, so the Jewish people believed that they were truly serving God and certainly praised by God. However, God examined the innermost heart of them and saw through their hypocritical substance. They didn’t obey God’s commandments but only focused on keeping the rituals and rules, so God detested them and said that “in vain they do worship me.” From God’s attitude toward them, I found that God doesn’t look at how we praise Him on our lips, or how much theory we are able to say, but looks at whether we contact Him, or worship and love Him with our hearts. Just as recorded in Matthew 22:37-38, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment.”
