A fisherman used a square net to raise fish. One day, he found that some fish hid in the corners of the square net and didn’t swim anymore. He was worried that the reason why they didn’t swim was because they were lazy and that this would affect their growth. Therefore, he turned the net into a round one to let them keep swimming. But, unexpectedly, a few months later, many fish died. After finding someone to check, he knew that these fish swam themselves to death. Later, he used the square net again. After observing carefully, he found that their not swimming was not because they were lazy but because they just took a small rest and then swam.
This little story reminded me of the life many people nowadays have: In order to seek fame and gain, they are kept constantly on the run. These little fish were deceived by the round net, so they couldn’t stop swimming and finally worn themselves out and died. If we also keep busy regardless of keeping regular hours, then will our consequences be the same as that of those fish?
Genesis 1:3-5 says: “And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.” As Christians, we were all familiar with these verses. However, today I came to realize that in the past I just knew God’s creation from them but didn’t know what kind of God’s will was hidden in them. From the first day when God created the heavens, the earth, and everything, that is, before we humans were created, God had allocated the night and day. From God’s work, we could see His love and cherishing for us. He knew that we didn’t know how to lead a life, so He separated the day and night ahead of time, allowing us to live regularly. Otherwise, if we kept working, we would work ourselves to death. God arranged for night to cover the land to force us to stop what we were working on and start to rest to regain our energy and lay the foundation for the next day’s work.
In order to allow us to exist in a better way, God painstakingly plans, meticulously arranges in all situations, taking thought for us in every way. However, do we cherish our lives bestowed upon us by Him? Look at generation after generation of people corrupted by Satan, they no longer see life as precious; instead they succumb to the evil trends—seeking money, fame and gain and treating their own lives as games, which cause all kinds of tragedies. Especially in recent years, the phenomena of “death from overwork” frequently happening are most capable of being able to illustrate the issue. For the sake of making more money, many people go against the rules of life given by God to us: working overtime every day and turning dawn and dusk upside down. Little do they know that if they work day and night like this, in the end they will only work themselves to death because they can’t stop to rest, just like the small fish in the round net. Just as what I saw on the internet a few days ago: Hu, engaged in research and development in Shenzhen, kept working overtime for nearly a month because of the urgent tasks, which caused him to get over-tired and have multiple organ failure, in the end, he died in The Third Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou. He was just 25; Li, a white-collar worker in Beijing, had a heart attack in his office, and died despite emergency treatment and he was only 24 years old. According to reports, Li also kept working overtime for a month. When people found that he had died, they saw that his QQ which was used for work was still online.
There are still many cases similar to that of “death from overwork” above. That the tragedies frequently appear is thought provoking. Many people all know this doctrine “Life is the most precious; material comforts will be gone in an instant,” but they still forever enjoy and never tire of seeking fame, gain and temporary material comforts, consequently causing them all kinds of diseases; some of the diseases which are serious even directly threaten their lives. With regards to this, let’s see what God admonishes us.
God says, “Can anyone take away the things that come from God? Can anyone alter their substance and function? Is anyone able to discomfit the night and day allocated by God, and the law of night and day ordered by God? Can Satan do such a thing? Even if you don’t sleep at night, and take night as day, then it is still nighttime; you may change your daily routine, but you are incapable of changing the law of the interchange between night and day—and this fact is unalterable by any person, is it not?
“When you stay up too late you’re tired in the morning, you don’t want to get out of bed, and you’re sleepy after you get up. If you get up too late, you can’t sleep at night. What do you do if you can’t sleep? You stay up and putter around. Once this kind of vicious cycle has gone on for a while, your body’s natural, normal metabolism will be out of balance.”
It turns out that God determining these laws for us is to make us exist normally. These laws cannot be changed or gone against by any created being. Once we go against them in order to satisfy our own selfish desires, this will signify that we have opposed God’s sovereignty and predestination. In the end, we will lose His care and protection and live in slow suicide. Then, why do we not scruple to trample on our own lives in order to seek fame, gain, money and status? The reason for this is that we have strayed from God and cannot be provided with His truths. Therefore we cannot see through Satan’s schemes and are trapped in its snare. God says, “So what are Satan’s sinister motives? … Satan will employ any method so people satisfy their own lusts and realize their own ideals. Are you clear on exactly what road Satan wants to lead you to? … If mankind does not follow God, but always follows Satan this way—using knowledge to continually enrich themselves, using science to ceaselessly explore the future of human life, using this kind of method to continue living—are you able to recognize what the natural end of mankind will be? What will be the natural final result? (Ruination.) It will be ruination: approaching ruination one step at a time. Approaching ruination one step at a time!”
From this we can see that Satan is using knowledge, science, money, fame and gain as bait to distort our outlooks on life and make us fight for satisfying our own lusts all our lives and ignore the value and preciousness of life. Under the temptation of various benefits and lusts, we never cease to work or make money with all our might, eventually our bodies basically have enough, and we exhaust all of our energy and also waste our time. During this course, we cannot listen to God’s word, much less have inclination to pay attention to what it means to, so we can only become more and more distant from Him, lose His care and protection and slide back into the abyss of death one step at a time … This is Satan’s final goal for which it corrupts people. We were originally created by God. He cannot bear watching we suffer Satan’s affliction and wants to save us so that we can stray from death and survive normally, so He has been incarnated amongst men and expressed words to reveal Satan’s sinister motives, allowing us to see through its trickery according to His words and at the same time know that He commands and rules over all things and that what He prepares for us is rich and plentiful. Only by coming before God, receiving the truth bestowed upon us by Him as our very life and making His words the only guide for our life and the highest maxim for life can we live out the true form of a human being, no longer brazenly trample on life for the sake of satisfying our personal desires and all we want to do is think about how to practice and experience God’s word, and exalt and witness His deeds and salvation, thus performing our duty and obligations as creations and living out a most meaningful life.
