A multi-award winning animated short film–a reflection on the meaning of life
Animated short film “EL EMPLEO / THE EMPLOYMENT” which has won 102 International Awards is directed by Santiago Bou Grasso from Argentina and written by Patricio Plaza. It replaces objects with human beings and satirizes the ruination of the soul in capitalist society with acid humor. It compares men to small screws in a big machine, which turn invariably and continuously at their own posts every day with helpless and stony expressions. All of them keep silent from the beginning to the end, and it overwhelms a feeling of suffocation with helplessness and fear. The whole film has shown an atmosphere of depression, helplessness and sadness. Moreover, at the end of the short film, the signing of the leading actor seems to express everyone’s inner voice.
After watching this short film, I really feel that what happened in it is also a portrayal of the modern society. Many people struggle bitterly in the big cauldron of the society, but they don’t know what they are fighting for, nor do they know what the value of life is. No matter whether they have a dream, they can’t avoid being assimilated by the society and are forced to adapt to the rhythm and pace of the society. People both at the top and the bottom of the social relationship have their own helplessness and indecision, however, they have to continuously work hard and move forward for their living, bearing the inner bitterness. … This phenomenon reminds me of God’s words, “Mankind, who left the supply of life from the Almighty, does not know why they exist, and yet fears death. There is no support, no help, but mankind is still reluctant to close their eyes, braving it all, drags out an ignoble existence in this world in bodies without the consciousness of souls. You live like such, with no hope; he exists like such, with no aim. There is only the Holy One in the legend who will come to save those who moan in suffering and long desperately for His arrival. This belief cannot be realized so far in the people who are unconscious. However, the people still yearn for it so.” “Humans, it would seem, are living in a terrorist world of darkness, which none among them seeks to transcend, and none among them thinks of moving on to an ideal world; rather, they are content with their lot in life, to spend their days bearing and raising children, striving, sweating, going about their chores, dreaming of a comfortable and happy family, of conjugal affection, of filial children, of joy in their twilight years as they peacefully live out their lives. … For tens, thousands, tens of thousands of years until now, people have been squandering their time in this way, with no one creating a perfect life, all intent only on mutual slaughter in this dark world, on the race for fame and fortune, and on intriguing against one another. Who has ever sought after?”
I have lived reluctantly in the world like this before, only knowing that I had to work for life. Even if I had dreams of living a meaningful life which was different from others, yet finally nothing has changed in my life. I had to make a compromise to the reality and became a drop of the torrent of society just for survival. Because of, I followed God’s work and obtained His salvation. Through reading , I learned that all of man’s hardship was created by Satan. It is Satan that instills wrong views of life and values, which made me feel I should abide by the course of life which I ought to have. I had no mind to seek for a meaningful life, and I paid no more attention to God’s work but followed along with Satan’s temptation and entered the sea of affliction.
If we only live to satisfy our physical body under the domain of Satan, we will have empty life and drift along, without any meaning and valve. Only by coming back before God, accepting God’s sovereignty and arrangements and pursuing the truth can we get rid of the helpless and gloomy life, then our life will be valuable and meaningful. Just as God’s words say, “Only if one knows God and has the truth does he live in the light; and only when his view of the world and his view of life change does he change fundamentally. When he has a life goal and comports himself according to the truth; when he absolutely submits to God and lives by God’s word; when he feels assured and brightened deep in his soul; when his heart is free of darkness; and when he lives completely freely and unrestrained in God’s presence—only then does he live a true human life and become a person possessing truth.”
Thanks to God’s salvation, I came before God and found a true valuable and meaningful life. I am willing to accept God’s sovereignty and arrangements, submit to God’s leading and walk on the true path of life.
