When I got home from work, my friend, a deacon, told me that she was replaced bybecause of her negligence. Looking at the depression on her face, I was overwhelmed and didn’t know what to say to comfort her. She said with a heavy heart, “It’s okay; leave me alone.” Seeing the lively and cheerful friend suddenly become reticent, I felt sad, not only for her, but also for myself.
Later that night, a little story on my Facebook deeply touched me. Here is the story: A little girl felt sad because she played a minor role in a school activity. She thought the teacher didn’t like her or she was not equal to the important role in her teacher’s eyes. After knowing this, her mother showed her clock components and told her that the humble role also has its own value and significance. Although these gears and screws are small, they also play a decisive role in the clock. Without them, the most beautiful watch could not work.
Each of us is just like the girl in the story, with the hope to be the leading role in life. Because the leading role will always be shining with a halo. But in fact, we may not play the leading role in life. Many times we just play the supporting role. The reason why my friend is so upset and depressed is that she has lost the aura of a deacon. She thinks she is no longer the dazzling role in the church, but an ordinary believer.
In fact, I have been holding such a point of view, too. Living in the world, I should stand high above all with fame and fortune, obtaining the high regard and support of all. Only such a life is complete, valuable and meaningful. Therefore, under the control of this point of view, I always take the lead whichever group I go, pursuing to be highly regarded and taking fame and status as the goal of my life. Once losing my status and high regard of people, I feel brooding, lash out against Heaven and man alike, and even cannot find the direction and goals of life.
It was not until I experienced some setbacks recently that I understood a little bit: Everyone created by God has a different mission, and each plays his or her part in their respective place. This world needs all kinds of people. If everyone is the protagonist, then who plays the other roles? Some people play leading roles in life. Others play supporting roles. Strictly speaking, there is no absolute leading role or supporting role on the stage of life. Therefore, even playing a supporting role does not mean inferiority. In fact, everyone is unique in God’s eyes, with different functions and missions. Just assays, “For the kingdom of heaven is as a man traveling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered to them his goods. And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey” (Mat 25:14-15). “The functions are not the same. There is one body. Each does his duty, each in his place and doing his very best, every spark of enthusiasm a flash of light, seeking maturity in life, thus will I be satisfied.” God has arranged for everyone to come into this world, bestowing on us different strengths and advantages. God demands that we dedicate our portion of energy and fulfill our mission. As long as we are able to submit to and arrangements, not blindly admiring or belittling others, viewing ourselves correctly , then we can use our strengths to fulfill our duties in the right place and live a meaningful life.
A friend of mine shared with me a passage of fellowship, of which a few words say, “If God asks us to be grass, then we should be grass instead of a big tree. If you are a big tree, don’t try to be a tall building. Be what you are and keep your place, diligently pursue the truth and fulfill your duty properly. Living like this is the best, not tiring. No matter what duty we perform or what position we hold in the church, as long as we can live out the truth to satisfy God and worship God normally, we will have the happiest life. Don’t be dominated by your ambitions or motivations. Instead, you should submit to God’s sovereignty and arrangements” (“The Significance of Submitting to God” in Sermons and Fellowship on Entry Into Life (I)). Reading this passage again, I feel deeply about it. Thinking of myself along the way, I’ve always been pursuing to be the protagonist of life, wanting to stand high above all and enjoy the blessings of status, and unwilling to play a minor role. Thus I have suffered lots of pain. If I had a correct understanding of God’s predestination and sovereignty, I wouldn’t always feel sorrow and pain. In the eyes of God, we are all creatures and He is fair to everyone. The tree has the role of trees, and the grass has the role of grass. Compared with the tree, the grass looks humble; compared with the tall building, the tree looks humble. But in the eyes of God, the grass has its function and so does the tree. Both of them have their own value, and none will lose its own function because of its insignificance. It is because of these different roles that the world we live in can be so rich and colorful. If everyone is the leading role, one can imagine how chaotic and colorless the world will become.
There are no minor roles in life, and each plays its respective role under the predestination of the Creator. On the great stage of life, we are just varieties of small roles. Only if everyone submits to the predestination and sovereignty of the Creator, play our own role, and fulfill our mission, will we small roles live a more wonderful, valuable and meaningful life, enjoying more release and freedom.
