One day, I read a story in a book:
Once there was a mountain climber, whose greatest wish was to conquer the Aconcagua. After a careful preparation, he began his adventure. He climbed from the foot of the mountain, and the nearer he got to the top, the more excited he was. Although it was getting later and later, his strong desire to fulfill his wish as soon as possible drove him to keep on climbing. Night fell with heaviness, and gradually the climber could see nothing in the darkness. But he still didn’t stop. When he was only a few meters away from the top, he suddenly slipped and fell. Falling at high speed, he was in great fear, thinking that he would certainly die. But then, he was held up suddenly by the rope tied to his waist, so he was suspended in the air. He was very scared and kept shouting, “Help me, God! Help!” Suddenly, he heard a deep voice from heaven,
“What do you want me to do?”
“God, save me!”
“Do you really believe that I can save you?”
“Then cut the rope round your waist.”
After a moment of silence and stillness, the climber decided to hold onto the rope with all his strength, which he thought could save his life.
The next day, the rescue team found his body, which was frozen and hanging to a rope, with his hands still clutching the rope tightly. And he was just one meter off the ground.
This is a short story, but it is thought-provoking. The climber could have survived, for God had told him the way to survive when he was holding the rope and begging God to save him. But he didn’t believe God’s words and deemed that only the rope in his hands was his sole lifeline. He held tightly onto the rope and at last lost his precious life. In fact, his death was not the result of the accident, but of his notion and imagination.
Today, faced with the return of the , don’t we also often cling to our own notions and imaginations and disbelieve God’s words? So many believers firmly hold that God’s work is all in the and that departure from the Bible is not belief in God. Therefore, they are still using the Bible to measure and judge the new work done by the Lord Jesus who has returned to flesh. Once they find anything God does is not in accordance with the Bible, they reject all of His work. Then what view should we take on the return of the Lord? Is there any evidence in the Lord’s words to support our thoughts? Almighty God says: “People’s approach to the Bible is one of obsession and faith, and no one can be completely clear about the inside story or substance of the Bible. Thus, the result is that today, people still have an indescribable sense of magicalness when it comes to the Bible; even more than that, they are obsessed with it, and have faith in it. Today, everyone wants to find the prophecies of the work of the last days in the Bible, they want to discover what work God does during the last days, and what signs there are for the last days. In this way, their worship of the Bible becomes more fervent, and the closer it gets to the last days, the more credence they give to the prophecies of the Bible, particularly those about the last days. With such blind belief in the Bible, with such trust in the Bible, they have no desire to seek the work of the Holy Spirit. In people’s conceptions, they think that only the Bible can bring the work of the Holy Spirit; only in the Bible can they find the footsteps of God; only in the Bible are hidden the mysteries of God’s work; only the Bible—not other books or people—can clarify everything of God and the entirety of His work; the Bible can bring the work of heaven to earth; and the Bible can both begin and conclude the ages. With these conceptions, people have no inclination to search for the work of the Holy Spirit. So, regardless of how much of a help the Bible was to people in the past, it has become an obstacle to God’s latest work. Without the Bible, people can search for the footsteps of God elsewhere, yet today, His footsteps have been ‘contained’ by the Bible, and extending His latest work has become double difficult, and an uphill struggle. This is all because of the famous chapters and sayings from the Bible, as well as the various prophecies of the Bible. The Bible has become an idol in people’s minds, it has become a puzzle in their brains, and they are simply incapable of believing that God can work exclusive of the Bible, they are incapable of believing that people can find God outside of the Bible, much less are they able to believe that God could depart from the Bible during the final work and start anew. This is unthinkable to people; they can’t believe it, and neither can they imagine it. The Bible has become a great obstacle to people’s acceptance of God’s new work, and has made it difficult to broaden this new work” (“Concerning the Bible (1)” in The Word Appears in the Flesh).
We have always believed in God according to the Bible alone. The Bible represents the Lord, represents God in our eyes, and it has replaced the position of God in our hearts. Rather than saying that we are believing in God, it’d be better to say that we are believing in the Bible. For this reason, when the of the last days, Almighty God, has come to work, we reject and even condemn His work, insisting that His words and work are not in accordance with the Bible. But have we ever thought why the Jewish chief priests, scribes, and Pharisees who had believed in God for generations received punishment from the Lord? Wasn’t it because they held onto the Old Testament and used its law to condemn the Lord Jesus and eventually crucified Him? Today, when Almighty God comes, we also use the Bible to resist His work. Isn’t it the same as the Pharisees’ resistance to the Lord Jesus? Just as Galatians 3:22 says, “But the scripture has concluded all under sin….” Therefore, we shouldn’t use our imaginations to measure and confine the new work of God. We should seek the truth with a hunger and thirst for righteousness. Look back to the time when the Lord Jesus came to work. Didn’t the disciples of the Lord Jesus recognize the voice of God and accept His work by seeking, investigating, and listening to His sermons? The Lord Jesus also said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3). “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled” (Matthew 5:6). So, as long as one puts aside his notions and imaginations and yearns for and seeks the truth, God will surely guide and enlighten him to understand His words so that he will follow the Lamb’s footsteps and meet the returned Lord.
It is just as Almighty God says, “Put your conceptions to one side! Stop and carefully read these words. If you yearn for the truth, God will enlighten you to understand His will and His words. Put aside your view of ‘impossible’! The more that people believe something is impossible, the more likely it is to occur, for the wisdom of God soars higher than the heavens, God’s thoughts are higher than man’s thoughts, and the work of God transcends the limits of man’s thinking and conception. The more that something is impossible, the more there is the truth to be sought; the more that something is beyond the conception and imagination of man, the more it contains the will of God. … So let us seek and discover His appearance from His utterances, and follow His footprints! God is the truth, the way, and the life. His words and His appearance exist concurrently, and His disposition and footprints shall always be accessible to mankind. Dear brothers and sisters, I hope that you can see the appearance of God in these words, and will begin to follow His footprints toward a new age, and into a beautiful new heaven and new earth prepared for those who await the appearance of God” (“The Appearance of God Has Brought a New Age” in The Word Appears in the Flesh).
